Fresh Grocer

We went to fresh grocer all with a different task, some had to look at fruits and other miscellaneous things. I had to look up the vegetables, and see where they get them from. The food comes from a variety of places such as, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Mexico, Brazil, Morocco, Columbia, Chile, and Canada. Our main goal is to map where Philadelphia gets their local food from all across the world. At fresh grocer you can find anything from fresh foods, to open buffets. They have a wide variety of items.

Farmer's market

The farmers market, was filled with a large variety of foods I didn't think they could make. They had apple pies, muffins, cablers, and different type of jams. They come all the way from Lancaster, Pa. All the items are at a reasonable price, and the food is usually pleasing. They dress very different than we do, but they still found a way to wear sneakers, which I find funny. The farmers markets supplies this neighborhood with local food, which is better throughout the city. They come every thursday. Some people may actually look forward to them coming. The next time I go I plan on buying something. The food looked too good.

John street

John Street came to our work place, and relayed a speech to us. We played various games, which all had lessons behind them. He gave out money also. A lot of money at that. He made us put our name in the hat and if our name was picked we got money. The moral of the story was you don't always get a fair chance. That was the point of the game. You had to be lucky in order for your name to get called, but that's not fair to everyone else. He was telling us this because, life isn't fair, so when the time comes just take it on the chin, and live with it.

He also motivated us by not falling for distractions. We played one game where ten people had to stand up front and they couldnt laugh, while everyone else was trying to make them. One guy won and he got twenty dollars from mayor street. All in all it was just coming to show how our generation gets distracted enough and isn't focused. Anyone up there could have won if they focused enough. His goal was to tell us to stay on the right track because, black men have a graduation rate of below 50%.

Portfolio Training

Yesterday we had ZAK come in and teach us small things for the future. Because, it was our first day the class wasn't as intense as he said it would be, so we just touched up on little things. We learned how to conduct ourselves during an interview. We also learned a method called SMART(Specific, measure, action, realistic, time). Its a way to plan goals for your future.

A week under my belt, and im goin green!

My first week as a BITS intern, was very compelling. I didn't think it would be this fun. The mentors were very friendly, and we actually have a lot in common. The days go by fast, and the project isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't want to do greenworks at first. I was least interested in it, but i'm glad im doing it now because, there is going to be many things in life that I wont like, so why not start here.

We learned about how Philadelphia is working on being the "greenest" city in the country. I must say their actions were pretty convincing. I often find myself unplugging things went im not using them, and actually throw things in the thrash. We also learned what sustainability is. Sustainability is living and working in ways that do not jeopardise our current and future social, environmental and economic resources.

Our objective for the summer is to show Temple's food environment. Where do they get their food from and how do they get it. We aren't only focusing on Temple its self, but this area of North Philly. We will go to markets and find out where and who they get their food from. We will also be making a map based on all the food venues around this area.

Not cloned, im original

Im Ryan. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Far from normal, with a swagg that kills. Literally(I mean mentally). Some call me a know it all, and they're probably right. I try to be the best I can be, and I highly doubt I'll let anyone stop me. I don't pay attention to the
little people

. Not saying im better than anyone, its just some people that are put here to bring me down. Adding to statistics is not an option. Athletics are cool. Like track. Its simple, just run to the finish line, but designer clothes are better. i.e H&M, Urban Outfitters, you get the memo. I play 2k till my fingers cramp, but I still find time to be me. Im more like a leader with no followers. And people who do follow me, I don't encourage it. Im a bad influence, im too real for ones liking. I tried to give advice once, bad idea. Heck, I don't even wanna be me, but i cant help it.

I dont remember being a dummy, and I dnt plan on being one no time soon. Im going to be a CRIMSON HAWK, in the fall (Indiana univ of penn, class 2014). College is a big step for me. Being on my own making my own decisions, but if you think about it, havent we all been doing that all our lives? That's why this is just the easy part...

The BITS(Building information technology skills) program, is for kids in the Philadelphia school district. The lowest level of entry is 8th grade. The students usually work in small groups, and have a specific task they have to complete before the sessions are over. At the end of the program, they have to present them to the other groups, to show what they learned/did.
